Week 22: Children of Darkness?

“I am the light of the world”

Excuse me? Who is this?

Jesus (John 8:12)

Yes, it is a most extra-ordinary statement. One that should make us sit up, stand up, or even go on our knees and prostrate! One that cannot be made by humans. By not even the Eternal President, Supreme, Great and Dear Leaders, 6th term Presidents and least of all by a full-blown narcissistic megalomaniac suddenly discovering his divine origins.

A stand-alone statement of sublime truth that can only be made by God.

Let us read the Gospel according to St. John beginning at the first chapter:

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9 That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.
Since there is in the above statement a reference to creation, it might not be out of place to take a quick look at the opening verses of the book of Genesis: 1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. 3 And God said, let there be light: and there was light. “
Not to put too fine a point on it, this narrative makes it clear that the heaven and earth and light were God’s creation. Now let us connect the dots, shall we? ” All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.”
I think we are intelligent enough to understand that the “Him” here alludes to Jesus as a member of the triune God, sine God (the Father) and the Spirit are already specifically mentioned.
Okay, the Light has come but are we enlightened?
We find the answer in John 3:19
” This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.”
If we read John 8:12 in full, we hear Jesus saying that “He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness but have the light of life.”
Lately through a series of video leaks, we have been hearing an earful about what goes on in the night in the city of Chennai; a plethora of platforms worried about being left out of a juicy story have hurriedly put out their own colourful reports reeking of rancidity of the foulest kind. If all this can happen in a putatively conservative South Indian city, it is not difficult to imagine what goes on elsewhere in the Vegas’s of the world. The Bible quite simply states ” it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret.”(Eph.5:12)
What do these things tell us?
We are not following the Light; for Jesus has unequivocally stated that He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness”
Dark exposés may be good for publicity and monetization of media, but they reveal stories of sordid sinfulness of the sort of which Sodom and Gomorrah were guilty in the days of Abraham.
What about us? Are we walking in the light or are we delightfully dabbling in deeds of darkness?

John 3:21 “But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God”.

Jesus is the light of the world
