Ahaz and his vain religiosity

Ahaz’s life is fairly dripping with religion. ” He offered sacrifices and burned incense at the high places, on the hilltops and under every spreading tree.” Can you believe it, he even sacrificed his son in the fire! Such idiotically ritualistic, blindly ceremonious religious practice! But sadly he did not seem to have a clear idea whom he was worshiping. He didn’t seem to know nor indeed care! The sum total of his religion was tradition.

And then his extraordinary obsession with the design of the altar he saw in Damascus! Morning sacrifices, evening oblations, grain offerings, burnt offerings, liquid offerings and so on. But no God.

Are you clinging to tradition to the exclusion of truth?
