Bera, the People’s King!

The image that Sodom conjures up is one of utter wickedness, unspeakable sexual practices, total disdain for God leading to eventual destruction by brimstone and fire. So it is difficult to believe that Bera, king of Sodom was the earliest in human history to recognize the importance of human resources and to put people first.

After Bera and his confederates were discomfited in battle by the northern kings, Abram comes to the aid of Sodom because of his nephew Lot and brings home the bacon. And coming up to propose a vote of thanks on behalf of his team, the king of Sodom notably says to Abram, “Give me the people and keep the goods for yourself.”

Let’s get our priorities right.
