It was rare in Israel to find Governors who didn’t tax the people and impose a levy on them in order to maintain their own high standard of living. This, in spite of the fact that they were only remnants in the land, the majority having been taken captive to Babylon. But Nehemiah was an exception. And why? “Out of reverence for God“. We have a God who can and does more than meet our needs, without putting any burden on the people.
