Prosperity or Poverty?
John is not pushing prosperity here, in the same sense as some preachers do today. His first concern is for the prosperity of our soul. Then it is his ‘wish‘ or ‘prayer‘ that our health and everything else, may go well.
This runs counter to the poverty gospel, one that holds “having material possessions is evil, rich people are ungodly and that self-denial is a means of earning righteousness in God’s eyes”*; but let us not conclude therefore, that it is ‘prosperity’ that John is endorsing.
Mind the soul, leave the rest to God!

Brilliant thoughts & presentation Judah.
I liked the way the text”soul” changed colour and gave the meaning of the word first. Then the verse came up. Was this intentional ? Have you done this before ? And how does one do this please ? Can you help me understand please ?
At the end of the day, looking after one’s soul is far more important than anything our material world can offer
Thanks, Albert
I am not sure I follow you entirely!
