The king of Assyria, the cat’s paw?
In the fable of the Monkey and the cat ( Jean de La Fontaine), Bertrand the monkey persuades Raton the cat to pull chestnuts from the embers amongst which they are roasting, promising him a share. As the cat scoops them from the fire one by one, burning his paw in the process, the monkey gobbles them up. They are disturbed by a maid entering and the cat gets nothing for its pains. While not an exact parallel, here in this story, the king of Assyria does not understand that he is but a tool in God’s hands and makes his own ambitious plans.
Some times we too are guilty of being carried away by our success and fail to realize that there is a sovereign God behind us.
