Hanun, You Are an Idiot!
The problem with this guy was that he listened to the wrong advice of his princely friends. He suspected David’s motive when the latter sent emissaries to condole the passing away of Nahash, king of Ammon, his father. Not only that, he took upon himself to publicly humiliate David’s men and ended up incurring David’s extreme displeasure. As a result, Hanun lost his country, his city, his crown – in short everything, and ended up paying a terrible price for one stupid act of bravado.
This is many a time the problem with being too clever by half; of being over smart; of constantly suspecting the motive of others when they reach out to you in all sincerity.
Why not rather err on the side of trust?
