Lapping like dogs!
Gideon had a peculiar problem. God told him his army was too large to take on the Midianites. Elsewhere we read ” Nothing can hinder the LORD from saving, whether by many or by few” and in this instance God decided that 33,000 is way too many. It came down to 10,000 in one stroke when the fearful turned back as per God’s command but God only needed a fraction of this number to display His might.
Thus it is that a drinking test was held. And those who knelt down to drink at the water were eliminated and only those who lapped the water like dogs made the grade.
No place for elegance, this is a battle field!
