Tragedy in the midst of a celebration
What should have been a joyous celebration of the Ark of God coming into the city of David ends in an anti-climax when Uzza was struck dead by God. His fault? He reached out to steady the Ark of God when the oxen pulling the cart stumbled. Good intention? Yes. But abysmally poor appreciation of the glory of God. The Ark of God was not merely a wooden box containing a few sacred things. It bears the name of the LORD who is enthroned between the cherubim. He is a living God.
When we are dealing with matters pertaining to the glory of God, we cannot be too careful. Hebrews 12:29 cautions us that our God is a consuming fire. He is more than capable of protecting His glory without asking for your assistance.
Don’t mess with the Master!
This passage has always been a bit unsettling to me. Like the way you brought out that our best intentions does not always appreciate the glory of God.
He is indeed far more able to protect his glory without our assistance.
