The Man upstairs!

In an effort to bring God down to earth (hasn’t He come down already?) and make Him readily accessible, some modernists make the mistake of de-deifying divinity. Levity and lightheartedness lead to flippant use of terms like the ‘man upstairs’, and ‘dad above’; these and other such frivolities do enormous damage to the appreciation of God as being awesomely pure and incredibly radiant.

It is easy to imagine the hymnist trembling when he wrote the immortal words ” ‘Tis only the splendor of light hideth Thee”!! No doubt he drew some inspiration from Ethan the Ezrahite.

“We have a friend in Jesus”, not a buddy!
