Naomi returns to Bethlehem after 10 years of sojourn in Moab. To begin with, it was a family – father, mother, two boys. At the end, it was just the mother Naomi – now a mother-in-law – and Ruth, one of her daughters-in-law. Father and the two sons died in the interregnum. It is clear that Naomi is still clinging on to her God, albeit with a great deal of bitterness. And Ruth is clinging to her, with inexplicable tenacity.
It was open to Ruth to go back to her father’s house and keep in touch with Naomi through e-mail, FaceTime and WhatsApp! No. Instead, she declared a daughter-in-law’s dictum: ” Where you go, I will go, and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.”
