Jephtha’s troubling vow

Some times we speak without thinking. When we do this with fellow humans, it is usually not of great consequence but we have to be doubly careful when we are talking to God. Jephtha wasn’t. The Italians might say he was somewhat pococurante in making the vow that he did. But he was dead serious about fulfilling the vow made to God. “Must it be you, the cause of my ill fortune” he cried when he saw his only daughter come out dancing.

In this context, it is good to recall the Preacher’s words:” It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfil it.”

Do not let your mouth lead you into sin.
