Just a dip, General – seven times!
Men of God behave strangely sometimes. Here is Naaman, the trusted General of the Syrian king arriving at Elisha’s door with gifts of gold, silver and clothing plus a retinue of officers, upon receiving assurance that he would be healed of leprosy by the prophet. Elisha does not even take the trouble to come out to greet him. Behind this lack of common courtesy lies a test of obedience to the word of the Lord.
Puffed up by his position, Naaman initially fails the test; his officers had to persuade him to comply with what was essentially a simple instruction: dip in the Jordan river seven times.
