Diotrephes or Demetrius?
The names sound confusingly similar to non-Greek ears, but there is a world of difference in their characters. Diotrephes represents people who arrogate to themselves the position of leadership in the church. In so doing, they ride roughshod over some, malign others and unwelcome apostles; moreover they prevent good people from extending their hospitality to apostles and excommunicate such. John declares that evil people of this kind have not seen God.
On the other hand, there are also people like Demetrius in the church, people of good report.
Who would you rather be?
