Singers were also sinners!
Sometimes the choir is a place of convenient refuge for guilty souls. The cassock and surplice could convey an aura of holiness and the voice lifted up in praise, it is hoped, will hide a multitude of sins. Also the phrase “preaching to the choir” lulls them into thinking that they are on the right side of the ‘salvation’ divide and they can sing their way to heaven!
They have another think coming from the book of Ezra. Eliashib had married a foreign woman and in the context, had sinned grievously.
Singers have no immunity from sinning!
Thanks Judah.
Helps in many small ways that are not easy to put down with pen and paper.
