It came as a surprise to me that Tamil Nadu has a minister for Prohibition. Only recently I read of Mr.Thangamani’s exertions to bring down the business hours for TASMAC run liquor outlets by two hours and shut 1,000 liquor shops. In his statement there were the usual credits: ” under the AIADMK regime”, “orders of the Chief Minister”. I was also looking for “as inspired by Amma”; maybe that was implied. Any way that is not my point.
What is the raison d’être for a portfolio of Prohibition in a state that is earning no less than Rs. 300,000 million through the sale of liquor? Under Mr.Thangamani’s able guidance, the sales revenue has been steadily rising year after year. I imagine the council of ministers uncorking a bottle of champagne when the annual figures come in. All of which of course means that the hapless minister is performing negatively!
I guess his key result area relates to how many times he announces that the government is committed to its policy of introducing liquor prohibition in a phased manner in Tamil Nadu.
Whatever that means!
